This is reinforced by Congolese and/or African tradition and social culture, where the girl is still considered to be the one who should stay at home, and girls are not sufficiently encouraged to consider themselves as actors of their own choices and happiness, and not to weigh the danger of early marriage. In order to do this, a cultural battle to promote gender equity and equality, which is well enshrined in the Constitution, is imperative.
Collette Namasunga, a former AVID beneficiary believes that "......one of the reasons why girls are married early is family poverty and lack of encouragement to study but also some choose to marry early because they feel they don't have many opportunities and choices available to them in life....", so girls need to be encouraged to study and boys need to be taught to respect girls' place.
